Marshmallow Leaf, Althaea officinalis, is not the confectionery. The sweet white candies were once made using the root of this plant, which is where the name originates. But the herb itself has a long and serious history in herbal medicine that predates the candy by a very long way. Althaea officinalis has been used since ancient Egyptian times, primarily for its mucilaginous quality. The natural compounds in the plant that create a coating, soothing effect on mucous membranes. As a smoking herb, that same quality translates into something immediately and pleasantly noticeable.
If you’ve ever drawn from either blend and thought that’s remarkably smooth, this is why. Marshmallow Leaf asks nothing of the smoker. It simply makes everything easier.
Why It’s In The Blend
Marshmallow Leaf is one of the most practically important herbs in the BEC range. It appears in both Classic Blend and Smooth Blend as a base herb, and its contribution to both blends is the same. A pillowy, velvety ease that makes every draw feel effortless.
In Classic Blend it gives the blend its characteristic easy draw. The sense that the smoke goes down without resistance. In Smooth Blend it combines with Mullein and Nettle to give the blend its defining smoothness. The quality that makes it feel like a different pace entirely.
When It Smokes
Marshmallow Leaf burns slowly and evenly. The smoke is smooth, mild and almost neutral in flavor. It doesn’t impose a strong character on the blend around it. Instead it creates the conditions, the ease of draw, the comfort on the throat, that allow the modifier and flavor herbs to do their work properly.
