Stinging Nettle, Urtica dioica, is one of those plants that most people have a strong personal relationship with, usually involving a childhood encounter and a dock leaf. The sting is real and memorable. What’s less well known is that Nettle has one of the longest and most varied histories of use in European herbal tradition. As food, medicine, textile fiber and, yes, as a smoking herb. Dried Nettle loses its sting entirely. The formic acid responsible for the sting evaporates during the drying process. What remains is a light, earthy leaf with a grounding, mineral quality that makes it a genuinely useful base herb in a smoking blend.
